Kõikvõimas Jumal on koos temaga.

Self-taught artist Kaido Rätsep represents one or even two subcultures. Although the study of outsider art prefers to play down the importance of the creator’s biography, in this case it is nearly impossible to understand the work without being familiar with its creator’s life. Kaido, a punk-turned-Christian, started doing art in a Pärnu kindergarten where he organized a “solo exhibition” about the Moscow Kremlin for his fellow kids. As a teenage punk the walls of his room turned into a huge painting, while the space was also crammed with unimaginable stuff brought from the dumping ground. It must have looked as if a messy artist’s studio. After quitting school he became a wild punk. He was the lead singer of the local punk act The Shitheads, though most of his performances halted before the show was over as he collapsed due to abuse of alcohol. Soon his friends would leave him because of drug addiction and interaction with life-long criminals. After her mother’s death, Kaido lost his home and beacame a squatter. Previous acquaintances would avoid him as a genuine tramp. Surely his artistic talent was leaving him behind as well.

A few years ago his talent came back to life when he started finding his way out from alcoholism with help from a local Christian community. After Sunday services he started visiting his brother’s daughter Marlene who would ask her uncle to paint animal families for her. The first he draw depicted a bunny-moter with a rolling pin, a bunny-father with a blue eye and a crying bunny-child. Marlene didn’t accept a sad family and demanded for a one which would boast with love. Uncle Kaido was handed a few drafts which he would then use as a starting point for the series of paintings called Life and more abundantly starring a Pible-inspired Lion King. The Lion King is an ultimately positive figure who is not at all a predator – he is a Super Lion who never harms or eats anyone! At the same time he is ethical, compassionate, noble, a natural born winner. A truely optimistic, symbolic parallel for Christ. God Almighty is with him.
